| Our Farm
We moved to a small acreage in Nebraska,
just a bit north of Omaha, in 1996. Our place is on a hill that looks out toward the Missouri River on the
east, and toward the west into more rolling hills. While the Missouri is relatively tame now, in the 1800's
navigating the river was a challenge. Each bend and curve of the river was named in
the early days of
settling this area, which helped the river boat captains pinpoint their location. We look out
over 'DeSoto Bend' and that became the name of our farm.
Born out of a love for natural fibers,
Helga was drawn to alpacas because of the fantastically soft fleece they produce. That their size
and care requirements are manageable for a small place certainly helped sell us on the idea of owning
them. We bought our first alpacas in 1998, and have carefully grown the herd. We base our breeding
program on increasing the quality of fiber (fineness being the main criteria) and maintaining and
improving the overall health of the animal. Alpacas that are not up to breeding standards remain
valuable for their fleece.
Our
business goals are to raise breeding and fiber quality huacaya alpacas,
to showcase alpaca end products and to promote the use of alpaca
fiber both for individuals (spinners, weavers, knitters...) and
for the commercial fiber industry.
We partner with two other breeders in some of
our activities that share similar business goals:
Dakota Alpacas and Grand A Alpacas. Together, we are
PrairieLand Alpaca Partners and can offer
a larger variety of alpacas, while maintaining small farm attention to our customers. We're proud to be
working with David and Phyllis Smith of Grand A Alpacas and Clint & Barb Koth of Dakota Alpacas.
All
of our alpacas are registered with The Alpaca
Registry, Inc. We are members of the Alpaca
Fiber Co-operative of North America, and the
Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association.
